Addy's broken bone

In early November, while having a garage sale at our friend Angie's house, Addy fell off a scooter and broke a bone in her foot. X-rays showed it was a buckle fracture, which is technically when the bone itself is bent. Because of the location of the fracture, if she were to put any pressure on it and break it, she would've required surgery to insert a pin in her foot. Thankfully, that didn't happen, but it did make me kick myself for having her put a little pressure on it after she initially fell. Note to self, don't ever do that again!

She was a real trooper throughout the week it took us to get it X-rayed, visit an orthopedist and then figure out the best way for her to get around. The orthopedist put her on crutches. Theoretically, this would've worked great - if she wasn't 7 years old. It was very painful watching her learn to use the crutches. She eventually got VERY good at them, but in the beginning, we weren't sure how we were going to let her go back to school. We ended up renting her a wheelchair for the 6 weeks she was on crutches so she could maneuver better at school and church and she (and we!) wouldn't have to worry about falling at school.

When she finally got the boot off the last day of school before Christmas break, there was great rejoicing. Addy is past the age of needing help to bathe, dress, get ready for school, etc. She also does some chores around the house. She needed help with all these things while unable to use her right foot. And living in a two story house didn't make things easier either! I was very eager for her to be a little bit independent again.

When the doctor gave her the go ahead to remove the boot, I honestly thought she'd be walking again in a few days. I wish! I was totally unprepared for the process of her regaining strength and balance in her right leg/foot. I also wasn't prepared for the psychological side. Here we are, almost 6 weeks past the time she got the boot off and she is still walking with a slight limp. It doesn't cause her any pain, but she is fearful of it hurting again. With time and lots of walks through the neighborhood and hikes around the ILC campus, she is beginning to improve. Hopefully she'll be running again soon!
